Changing the face of investment management




We are looking to offer internships to Black students across the UK to help kick start their career in investment management.  Currently over 170 of the industry’s leading players are participating as a way to source a more diverse group of talent for the long-term. Internships will be paid and last a minimum of six weeks over the Summer of 2021. Please note that participating firms are based almost exclusively in London.

What will I gain from this internship?

This internship will give you an opportunity to learn about investment management first-hand at a leading firm. You will have the opportunity to develop your soft skills, financial skills and most importantly your own network of high achieving professionals.You will join a community with access to a tailored programme ahead of, and during, the internship to ensure you learn as much as possible from the experience.

What is Investment Management?

There are lots of different types of firms in the investment management industry and this initiative has companies participating from all parts of the sector including long only, hedge fund, private equity, credit and real estate managers, together with consultants and pension funds. There are different roles in these different sectors but #100BLACKINTERNS will be focusing only on positions where people make investments. Who can apply?


You are encouraged to apply if you are a Black person currently studying at a university in the U.K., on a gap year or recently graduated from a U.K. university (2019 and 2020). This is open to Black persons of all academic backgrounds.

Who will be selected?


The firms participating in the programme will select the intern or interns they would like to hire. Each firm will have their own way of evaluating candidates, which may include interviews (virtually or in person) and/or assessments. Typically firms will look for the following traits in candidates: intellect; strong work ethic; curiosity; strong sense of initiative; organisational skills; analytical skills and excellent communication skills. How do I apply?

Please keep in mind that you apply to the #100BLACKINTERNS programme as a whole, rather than to a specific firm that is participating. When will I know whether I have secured an internship?


You should expect to know whether you have been successful by the end of December, but likely before. If you do not secure an internship, please do not be discouraged.  The programme is competitive and you can apply again next year. Please note that given the volume of applications we expect to receive we will not be able to provide feedback on individual applications. 

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need previous experience?


No you do not. However a demonstration of required skill sets such as work ethic, curiosity and initiative are extremely important . This can be shown through blogging, previous internships, society involvement etc. Don't be modest!

Can I apply to specific firms?


No you can't. All of our partner companies are leaders in their field, therefore all applications will be shared at random between them. 

Do I need a warm introduction to be considered?


No you do not. You do not need to know anyone at any of the companies to be considered. You just need to make your application stand out, so be creative.


What is the most important thing you look for?


The most important thing we are looking for is potential.  We are looking for fast learners who have a strong work ethic and take initiative. If you can demonstrate these skills you will be at an advantage, so be sure to give examples in your application.

Can I get feedback on my CV before I apply?


Due to the volume of applications we expect to receive, we unfortunately are unable to offer personalised feedback. However, we will be hosting an event in September where we will be sharing tips and tricks to make your application stand out. Sign up here if you would like to attend.

How much can I expect to be paid?


Each firm participating in the programme will set their own pay, but it will be no lower than London Living Wage.

Do I have to attend a U.K. university ?


Yes. You are only eligible if you are attending or attended a U.K. based university.
